Microphone for Content Makers
We are sure almost all of us have favorite YouTube users or streamers out there that we are loyal and always watch or listen. With the huge widespread of social media alike platforms on the internet, it sparks creativity and the reason why we can’t stop from scrolling through our feed or browse for a video that has relation to our interest is because we have so many sources and people with the same hobbies or field of interest tend to support and watch each other.
We also see the new trend of influencers who are more like the artist of internet and these people are having lots of followers who often mimic or try what they have been recommended to. This opens a new possibilities to amateur video recording at home for many of them are streaming from their living space and unlike those professionals making films with expensive set up equipment, content makers usually go for the affordable tools first especially when they just starting since not all of us have the fortune to spend yet.
One of the most important equipment as a content maker or video streamer is a good microphone because apparently, the one in our computer, laptop, and smartphones are not good enough for a wider market to view and listen. In the past we are only faced with condenser or dynamic microphone which often used in music recording but today, we also have USB-C microphone to directly connecting the input to your smart device. This microphone will aid the audio recording and overall bettering the quality of our video.
As the name suggests, a USB-C microphone is a mic with the said connection because today, this type of port is more widely used and quickly, all smart devices are starting to move for this higher connectivity especially on smartphones and tablets. When the connectivity first appearing in various devices, audio equipment manufacturer is slow to see the opportunity so we have very little options at that time but, it is not the case anymore today since the market has grown rapidly.
Many video streamers are using this type of microphone while making their content through smartphone or tablet but, one thing we have to consider before shopping for one is make sure it is made for the kind of operating system we are using because apparently, not all of them can be used with iPhone or Android based device. In addition, our phone may not have sufficient power to make the tool work so, see the product compatibility first before making any decision. Read also Behringer Q1202USB vs QX1202USB here.
About Shure MV88 and MV88+
If you are an aspiring content maker and want to start the journey or already starting and want to upgrade the audio quality of your video, now is a good time to see what the market has to offer for there are quite the amount of them out there. For those who seek quality and still want to spend relatively less, Shure is one of the best brands to go and they are also one of our favorites when it comes to microphone.
This company has a long history and already very well-known among enthusiast and professional alike with high quality products and wide collections. Few years ago, they release an iOS condenser microphone which later become the favorite of many streamers and content makers and it is the Shure MV88 digital stereo condenser microphone. In addition, they also release the higher brother called MV88+ which is claimed to be “more open” in sound fashion but, for customers, it still can be hard to decide which model to go.
Before we are moving further, the first difference between both of these amazing portable condenser microphone is the compatibility because as it has been mentioned above, the original MV88 is made for iOS users and it is because it has lightning connection which attach directly to your iPhone or iPad. On the other hand, the MV88+ is made to be more versatile because Android users can also use this microphone as well. However, only few can provide enough power for the equipment.
Based on Shure website, besides iOS devices with USB-C and lightning port, only few Samsung phones can power MV88+ and you have to own at least Galaxy S7 or Note 8 to properly use the microphone. But, it is not closing a chance for your new Android phone to be able to use the unit as well because new phone like Pixel 2 has been reviewed to have no issue working with this mic via USB-C port.
Shure MV88 and MV88+ Design
From the outside, in a glance they don’t look like a different microphone at all once you remove the foam head which is to filter the wind and making the audio more reliable. What’s different is the fashion for original MV88 is silver and the latter is full black which is nicer in our opinion and looks subtler. Another difference is on the build and if you can check closely, there is a hinge at the bottom of MV88 mic and making the head move back and forth.
This feature is great when directly attached to a phone so we can focus where the sound came from, but the MV88+ doesn’t have the hinge and it is more solid or robust yet, this model is packed with mounting system or tripod whether you want to use handheld or place it above a table and any solid surface. This made MV88+ have different port placement and it is all positioned directly below the main unit. In addition, it comes in a rolling pack, similar to makeup brush.

On the app, we can use Shure app for both of these microphone, the Shure Motiv app which is one of the best app we can use to work seamlessly with the equipment but here, we can also adjust the sample and bit rate to follow your recording needs. As specification goes, any of them can record audio at 16 or 24-bit and at a sampling rate of 44.1kHz or adjusted to 48kHz in which both sampling work with both bit rate as well while the frequency range of the mic is around 20Hz to 20kHz.
Shure MV88 and MV88+ Connectivity and Mounting
As for connectivity, as it has been mentioned above, the original Shure MV88 is only coming with lightning plug and meant to be used with iOS devices but, in MV88+ this feature is expanding with USB-C port only and the included cable makes it more versatile when used for live streaming or video blogging style in which the streamer is holding the camera by themselves with a tripod. In addition, this microphone is also featured with headphone port to allow user monitor the audio.
This feature is not available in many similar microphone including MV88 so we do have more control over the audio being recorded here. Another feature that makes Shure MV88+ at another level of microphone is the Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod which is packed with your unit and it is supporting both the mic and your smartphone. The tripod has 3 legs that when closed will become a thick stick when used while being held or we can spread it then put above table or any solid surface.
Shure MV88 and MV88+ Performance
On the performance part, both of them are definitely one of the best to get in the market for USB microphones and it shows with the amazing sound recorded from any of them even without using the DSP in which we do prefer better to manually adjust them setting. However, the best result seems to be when recording in flat since it is getting cleaner signal and then we can adjust some of EQ or compressor as needed however, for video MV88+ will be the more ideal option.
This is because this model have another app called Shure Motiv Video app, making it a better choice for filming and video streaming. The sound quality is almost identically nice but in terms of versatility, the latter is more useful for different situations.
Comparing these almost identical brothers are actually quite easy because they are made to be different and borrowing other people’s words, the MV88+ is another monster. It is compatible with Android based phone, have USB-C port instead of jack, have headphone port for direct monitoring, video streaming ready, have tripod, and can be mounted together with your phone as well. All of these are not available in the original MV88 yet, the little brother is more affordable and faster to set up.
Shure MV88 vs MV88+
Up to this point, we are sure many of you can already decide to go with which model because they are quite different. Our recommendations are those with less budget and only deal with audio will be better with MV88 but if you are video streamer or film maker, Shure MV88+ is the best model to bring home.
